At Marrow Family EyeCare, we believe that your eyesight is a precious gift that needs to be protected. Just because you have "good" eyesight, doesn't mean that you have healthy eyes. For this reason, our examinations are the most thorough and comprehensive that you will find anywhere. In addition to determining if you need glasses, we routinely evaluate fixation, ocular-motor skills, depth perception, color and peripheral vision, binocularity and your ability to focus at different distances.
In addition, our exams include a glaucoma check, corneal health evaluation, and if indicated, a dilation of the eyes so we can look for cataracts, retinal disease and damage due to diabetes or high blood pressure. Even more, we can utilize our state-of-the-art equipment and technology to assist in the documentation and diagnosis of disease.
Since our comprehensive vision and eye health evaluations are so thorough, our examinations often take about 1 hour to complete, after which, the doctor will present you with the results of the examination and all available options. At Marrow Family EyeCare we also take the time to listen to all your concerns and will answer all your questions. Since each examination is age-specific and customized to each patient's visual needs, whether you're a truck driver, computer user, school student or athlete, we've got the complete examination that is perfect for you.
In regards to the five human senses, a national survey reported that 4 out of 5 Americans viewed eyesight as the most important and the one that they would least like to lose. However, of those same people polled, less then 55% admitted to getting a routine eye examination. Unfortunately, many people incorrectly assume that if they if they can see OK, then their eyes must be "healthy."
These same people also mistakenly believe that they need an eye exam only when they notice some sort of vision change. It is this misperception that causes many patients to seek help only after some vision loss or decrease has been noticed,
which for many people, is too late. Studies have shown that, as a general rule, early detection and intervention of an eye disease dramatically reduces the chance of significant vision loss.
Annual examinations conducted by well-trained eye doctors who dilate (widen) the pupils routinely in order to view the whole retina, is critical to early detection.
Since only a small area of your retina, called the macula, is actually dedicated to central vision, a disease process or injury could be occurring elsewhere in the eye and you'd never know it. Unfortunately, if a disease process or injury
goes undetected and untreated it often becomes very difficult to regain any lost sight. That is why, in the interest of preventative medicine, it is so important to make routine examinations with dilation a part of your annual wellness program.
Today, diseases like macular degeneration, diabetes, high blood pressure, glaucoma and cataracts cause significant vision loss and blindness in thousands of Americans each year. Unfortunately, many of these patients had early, often treatable, signs of eye damage that went undetected for years because they were not getting routine, comprehensive examinations.
Although most doctors have some form of basic eye training, the doctors of Marrow Family EyeCare have undergone years of specialized training and are nationally certified in the treatment of eye disease and trauma. As a result, your eyes are not just "tested" for glasses, but examined thoroughly for any signs of eye disease and injury. Make a comprehensive eye exam a part of your yearly wellness program,
and make sure you get examined by a doctor who has the training to diagnose and treat diseases and will take the time to examine your eyes thoroughly, your eyes are just too important to risk.

Vision Therapy
The optometrists of Marrow Family EyeCare are proud to be able to offer quality Vision Training to residents of the Shenandoah Valley and surrounding communities, and are two of just a handful of doctors in all of Virginia to have the specialized training and facility to offer this professional service.
Optometric visual training, sometimes called vision therapy or VT, is that part of optometric care devoted to developing, improving and enhancing people's visual performance. Some people often describe it as "physical therapy" for the eyes and brain. Over several decades, optometrists have developed and successfully used visual training, often in combination with selected lenses, to:
Prevent vision and eye problems from developing or worsening.
Develop the visual skills needed to achieve more effectively at school, work, or sports.
Enhance functioning on tasks demanding sustained visual effort.
Remediate or compensate for vision and eye problems that have already developed.
Optometric vision therapy helps those with visual problems to redevelop the way they see, to make learning easier. Those optometrists who are trained and practice vision therapy, have thousands of case studies of children with learning related visual problems who have benefited greatly from vision therapy. They develop abilities to use both eyes more efficiently, integrate vision with other senses, and children do remarkably better in school. Adults with visually demanding jobs, such as athletes and pilots, also attest to the value of visual training in sharpening perception skills for the betterment of their performance and many professional athletes utilize vision therapy to increase hand-eye coordination. Vision therapy programs are tailored to individual needs and problems. They can be practiced in the office and at home. Visual training and nearpoint lenses can open up a new world of achievement and joy to patients.

Evaluation for Contact Lens
Successful contact lens wear begins with a comprehensive eye examination by one of our optometrists and a thorough fitting by the contact lens technician. It is IMPORTANT to know that contact lenses are NOT "one size fits all." There are a lot of different parameters that go into selecting the proper contact lens, and to avoid possible injury a patient MUST be fitted by a trained professional. The choice of contact lenses is based upon the clinical findings of the doctor and lifestyle and personal preferences of the patient. The patient is evaluated with lens in place on the first day and again at one week. Additional visits may be required depending on the complexity of the fitting.
First Time Contact Lens Wearers
First time contact lens wearers require a special dispensing visit. The contact lens technician trains the new wearer who then must demonstrate proficiency in placement and removal of the lens. Lens wearers are provided with instructions for proper care, hygiene, disinfection and wear.
The patient receives a care kit containing a storage case and solutions for cleaning, rinsing and disinfection. A wearing schedule and instruction booklet are provided. A variety of products are available for contact lens care and we will select the one most suitable to your needs.
Follow up visits are necessary for the new contact lens wearer. As the new wearer gradually adapts to the contact lenses, changes can occur which may require modification or lens change.
Your comfort and eye health are our primary concern.

Surgery Co-Management Services
If our doctors find that you would benefit from surgical services such as Cataract surgery, Laser surgery, Refractive surgery or Strabismic surgery, we will refer you to highly-skilled local eye surgeons whom we trust to provide you with optimal care. As a courtesy to you, and to ensure that your eyes are healing properly, we will often manage you pre-operative and post-operative care. Once your eyes have fully healed from your surgical procedure, we will also evaluate your vision to provide you with glasses or contact lenses that allows you to see sharply.
